"He slept in a guitar case as a baby and appeared in Newsweek Magazine for break-dancing at age 10..."
Born on the bayou in Houston, I grew up around the music business. As a kid I was often either in the studio, on the road, or self-teaching with the array of instruments and equipment in our garage - the rehearsal and recording space for Dad's new-wave band.
I had a lot of single-serving mentors - mostly musicians, engineers, producers, and promoters who would give me pointers directly, or whom I would observe, and listen to.
By age 12 my hobbies included recording random sounds around the city, and making my own experimental music using tape loops, guitars, keyboards, and a Commodre-64.
As a teen I played in bands and started to DJ at underground dance events. I was nominated for Best DJ, Best Electronica, and Keyboardist of the Year in Houston and began releasing music on vinyl, CD, and early digital networks, like mp3.com where my music hit the top-10 on various electronic charts.
My live, electronic band Lunatex was regionally popular and starting to get some international attention, including from Microsoft Games and their new (at the time) XBOX console.
After providing XBOX with several, original tunes to support soundtracks also featuring NIN, Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, New Order, Aphex Twin, and other icons I was asked if I could manage a few sound effects for a game.
I fell in love with putting sound to picture, and moved to Los Angeles to start an apprenticeship with a third-generation Hollywood film sound designer at the legendary Soundelux studios. We were hired as a team in 2005 by Midway Games and my career in game audio became a full-time pursuit.
After a few games in California, I moved to Montreal and spent 5 years making video games in Canada... including Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - winner of Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design award from the Academy.
20 years and numerous, top-selling games later I am still having fun advancing the craft and advocating for the use of audio in all of its forms to elevate digital experiences from video games to virtual reality. I love what I do, and I'm truly grateful for the journey.
